Nat Pennington has spent the past two years looking for the best strains of cannabis. After sifting through 10,000 different plants from across the state, the founder and chief executive officer of the Humboldt Seed Company narrowed it down to 10 strains he calls “unicorns.”

On June 5, one of those 10 strains will be given out to participants in the Northern California edition of The Grow-Off, a science-based cannabis growing contest that began in Colorado in 2006 and kicks off locally at Satori Wellness in McKinleyville.

Each of the participating teams, of which there are currently 45, will get two clones of the strain at the clone adoption ceremony at Satori, where stragglers can sign up the day of between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
